Spotlight on Siena Staff is an ongoing series capturing the reflections, motivations and advice from some of our amazing 成人抖阴 staff. Today, we spotlight Art and Product Design Teacher, Kathryn Anderson as she reflects on her journey in the arts since secondary school. She encourages students to embrace creative exploration and pursue their artistic passions, highlighting how such experiences can lead to a fulfilling career 鈥� or even multiple careers 鈥� in the arts, as her own path demonstrates.
"I am writing this as our students are considering their subject selections for the new year. Reflecting on my journey since completing secondary school, I offer the same advice I received: 'If you do not have a clear vision for your life, do not worry. Do not be afraid to try new things and pursue what you enjoy, building skills and knowledge through experiences that inspire you. This can help you discover a career you love 鈥� or, as my experience shows, even two!'
I have always loved the arts. Growing up, my country school only offered one arts subject in VCE which was not enough for me. With the support of my teachers, I completed three arts subjects by enrolling in courses at another school. When I filled out my tertiary application, I still did not have a specific career in mind; I just knew it had to be in the arts and in Melbourne. I was eager to explore the world and see what it had to offer.
I completed a Diploma of the Arts (Small Companies and Community Theatre) at Swinburne University of Technology and enjoyed a diverse range of opportunities in the arts industry. This includes office work, festivals, touring with large shows, managing venues, working with talented performers and technicians, leading teams, and training new staff. It was a fantastic experience but challenges arose when my priorities shifted after starting my own family. I began to explore other passions and completed a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment while working in an amazing team to set up a new traineeship program for the Arts Centre Melbourne. As my eldest child started school, I felt inspired to learn more about education and recognised the value and importance of teaching. This led me to pursue a Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) and Arts degree at Deakin University. Returning to study was both rewarding and challenging 鈥� balancing family, work and academics, but my desire to teach was confirmed.
As a teacher, I aim to inspire my students to appreciate the arts, recognise the opportunities it offers, value the skills of other artists, and develop the language to share their discoveries. One of the things I love about Siena is its commitment to providing a well rounded education that includes a range of arts subjects, promoting creative and critical thinking through hands on learning. The future needs young people who can think outside the box, adapt, and make the most of the beautiful gift of life.
As a passionate teacher of Product Design and Art, I have found that my teaching values align well with those of Siena and the broader Catholic education ethos. Complementing my passion for the arts, my pedagogical approach emphasises the importance of belonging. I believe students want to feel seen and heard, so I focus on creating classroom environments that foster authentic engagement, active participation and a strong sense of community. Over the past two and a half years, I have been privileged to contribute to our school鈥檚 mission, helping to cultivate a rich and inclusive learning environment. Being part of a positive and supportive school community that shares my dedication to nurturing young hearts and minds is incredibly rewarding."
